Description
The Hawthorn tree holds a special place in Celtic lore. It is said the fairies had a special affinity for the Hawthorn which was one of the Three Sacred Trees, along with Oak & Ash.
The practice of tying pieces of cloth to a wish tree is often associated with nearby clootie wells, as they are known in Scotland and Ireland, or "clout" or "cloughtie" in Cornwall. This tree had a sacred well nearby and the tie round the tree helped us to located St Finians holy well in Kenmare.
