Description
From my series Celtic Symbols.
The Ogham symbol is thought to reference the Birch Tree. the word Beith, Old Irish Beithe means "birch-tree", cognate to Latin betula.
Ogham is an Early Medieval alphabet used primarily to write the early Irish language "orthodox" inscriptions, 4th to 6th centuries. There are roughly 400 surviving orthodox inscriptions on stone monuments throughout Ireland and western Britain; the bulk of them are in the south of Ireland, in Counties Kerry, Cork and Waterford.
The Birch is associated with the sun, making the birch a solar emblem, it's said to facilitate passion, energy, as well as growth.
Birch wood is believed to ward off evil, banish fears and build courage. Cradles were once made from birch wood for the sole purpose to protect the helpless children.
