Description
The sky is rich with color as the sun sets behind Mt Konocti in Northern California.
The volcano is the most visible landmark in Lake County other than Clear Lake.
Mount Konocti first erupted some 350,000 years ago and last erupted 10,000 years ago it is still considered to be an active volcano.
There are many legends surrounding the name of the volcano and the one I like best, has the name meaning Mountain Woman from the Pomo Indian words konoc -mountain and htai -woman.
I also enjoyed reading the story of Mary R. Downen who in 1903 climbed the mountain and upon reaching the summit, declared she had never seen a more beautiful view.
Mary staked her claim and began homesteading on the mountain. Mary would signal her family down in the valley on sunny days using a mirror to reflect the sunlight, letting them know all was well.
Mt Konocti is truly a gem and I've been fortunate to live within its shadow.
