Description
Along the Northern California coast just south of the quaint town of Mendocino I came across this lonely stretch of California coastal prairie. To me this is another example of why California is called the Golden State.
California Coastal prairie grassland is so old, some of the grasses and wildflowers growing here have their origins dating back 2.4 to 5.4 million years ago.
This grassland forms a mosaic of grasses that include California reed grass, Tufted hair grassl and Red fescue.
The prairie is also home to a variety of sedges, rushes and wildflowers
Not only beautiful, these grasslands remove more carbon from the atmosphere than any other ecosystem in America.
And the biodiversity is so rich, the coastal prairies in California support the highest plant diversity of any grassland in the United States.
