Description
From my series Celtic Symbols. The Celtic cross is a symbol that combines a cross with a ring surrounding the intersection.
The ringed cross is closely identified with Celtic heritage, the history of the Celtic cross goes back to a time before the Christian conversion of Scotland, Ireland and Wales.
There are many beliefs as to what the four arms on the cross represent. Some believe the four arms of the cross represents the four elements, earth, air, fire and water. There are others who see this as the four parts of man, mind, soul, heart and body.
They also represent the four directions of the compass.
In Ireland, there is a popular legend that the Celtic Catholic cross was introduced by Saint Patrick during his time converting the pagan Irish, though there are no examples from this early period. It has often been claimed that Patrick combined the symbol of Catholicity with the sun cross, to give pagan followers an idea of the importance of the cross by linking it with the idea of the life-giving properties of the sun.
In todays world the ringed cross is an emblem of Celtic identity. Both the Gaelic Athletic Association and the Northern Ireland National football team have used versions of the Celtic cross in their logos.
