Description
From my series Animals In Architecture.
A gryphon also spelled griffin and griffon is a mythical creature. The combination of eagle and lion makes the gryphon a powerful symbol of vigilance and strength. Gyphon's are used for guarding treasure and priceless possessions and have been used in architecture for that reason.
The Valley Life Sciences Building, built 1930 on the campus of U.C.Berkeley in California. It is decorated with a collection of great animal carvings and Griffins stand guard at the entrances around the building.
When built in 1930, the VLSB was the state of the art, and was the largest building in Berkeley, and also the largest concrete building west of the Mississippi. The VLSB with a total of 400,000 square feet of space is the second largest building on campus.
